David L. Foster is the CEO of Business Valuation Resources (Portland, OR), an information-industry company he acquired in October, 2005. BVR has the leading database of financial details of private company acquisitions, and is the premier provider of education and research for the business valuation and related professions. In Foster’s first three years, BVR grew 101%. Prior to BVR, Foster was the president of IOMA (New York, NY), the specialized management how-to publisher. He founded IOMA in 1982, and sold it to the Bureau of National Affairs in 1998, staying on as president though 2005. He has served on the board of eight publishing companies in the last few years, including publicly-traded BNA (Washington DC), IOMA, Kennedy Information (Peterborough, NH), Business Publishers Inc. (Silver Spring, MD), BNA International (London, UK), North American Publishing (Philadelphia, PA), and Pike & Fischer (Silver Spring, MD). Foster is a past president of the Specialized Information Publishers Association (SIPA), and served on its board of directors from 1989 through 2001. He won SIPA's highest honor, the Hall of Fame award for lifetime achievement, in 2000. He’s also on the board of Copyright Clearance Center (Danvers, MA), the largest rights management organization in the world, and serves on CCC’s rightsholder and finance committees. His prime philanthropic and volunteer interest is Bates College (Lewiston, ME), and he’s on the program development committee at Symphony Space in New York City, which does arts programming, including Selected Shorts, the popular NPR series.
